Winter
was one of the first real pets I had. Before I moved to a new house we
had another rabbit, but he was an outside rabbit and didn't really like
people all that much. Since we were moving we had to leave him behind, and
that really upset me. So not long after we moved, my mom brought home this
tiny little baby rabbit, and we named her Winter. She was the sweetest rabbit
I had ever seen. And she grew very big, very quickly. Before we knew it she
was too big to hold easily, and because she didn't like to be held, it was
even more difficult. She grew to be bigger than our Chihuahua.
Things in our lives had begun to get very busy, and our attention for her
began to lessen. After a while we were debating on giving her to a family
that could give her so much more attention, but because she was so old, we
didn't want to have her last years be with people she didn't know or feel
comfortable with. So we tried harder to give her the attention she needed.
And we did. We let her be her little bunny self and hop around outside to her
heart's content. We always stopped at her cage if we were walking by it to
say hi and pet her.
Once I left for college I couldn't give her attention anymore, so my family
had to keep that up. Every time I came home, I would love to see her - I
preferred her over our Chihuahua to be honest. But one time when I came home,
she looked incredibly skinny. I couldn't understand why, because we fed her
all the time. We kept a close watch on her, and over time she began to
quickly deteriorate. She wouldn't eat much, she couldn't really move. When it
got to the point that she couldn't move at all we had to take her to the vet.
At that point we had to have her put down. The vet told us that she had been
harming herself by chewing on her legs. I couldn't understand why she would
do that, and we didn't want to take her elsewhere to find out why.
Winter lived a very long and healthy life, and I'm glad that we gave her a
good home for all those years. I couldn't have asked for a better pet.
Hopefully bunny heaven is treating her well. She was, and always will be my
little baby girl, and I will miss her like crazy.
