Buddy is my little baby. He's my second hamster, and a little cuddle
bug. He goes by a lot of names, his actual one is Buddy, I just kept
calling him that and it stuck. However, my mom calls him No-Name, my dad
calls him Crash (though often refers to him as 'the rat'), and my
brother calls him Peter.
When we went to the pet-shop he was the hamster that stood out compared
to the other ones. Buddy was unique, he ran around a lot, and he was so
tiny! He was just four weeks old so I wasn't surprised by his size at
the time. (I'd never seen such a young hamster in person, my first
hamster was about ten weeks old when I got her.)
During his first week Buddy was very skittish and hid when he wasn't
using his wheel or getting food or water. If he saw me he'd stop what he
was doing freeze in place 'til I was out of sight. After a while he
started to warm up to me and accepted treats from me without hesitation,
though he'd always try to jump out of my hand when I held him. After a
month I told myself he was just a look, feed, but don't touch hamster.
Boy was I wrong!
During his second month with me he'd suddenly become a lot more social,
Buddy would walk up to my hand and sniff it, and when I set him on my
lap he'd find a cozy spot and just sit there snug as a bug for a few
minuets before trying to leave. Nowadays he'll sit on my lap for up to a
half hour as I surf the web without budging! And when my hand is in his
tank he'll try to crawl on it. Buddy has definitely blossomed into a
amazing little guy full of love.
I never really thought much about his size until recently. A friend asked
how old he was a couple of weeks ago so I did the math and found out he
was already 5 months old! Time sure does fly fast; I thought he suntil
had a few months of growing in him left, but he's pretty much done now!
He loves butter lettuce, stuffing his face full of food, running on his
wheel all night (thankfully it's silent!), and obviously snuggling up on
my lap until he gets bored. He isn't one for exploring, and seems to get
nervous when set into a play pen, Buddy is much happier perched on my
shoulder, where he can see the world.
