Miffy
is snow white, with pink eyes and, being Netherland Dwarf, is small. He
is just four years old, a gentle fellow but with attitude and firm ideas
about what he wants, which he makes clear to us.
It was four years ago now, when we first saw him in a pet shop. He was in a
crowded cage with several other rabbits, larger than himself and an
uncountable number of guinea pigs. He sat in a corner with his back to the
rest, facing outwards and looking miserable. With those pink eyes pleading
for help, we decided at once that he must come home with us. We bought a new
cage and the things he would need then he was popped into a box and we headed home.
When the cage was ready, we put him down in front of it and waited. After a
few moments sniffing it and examining it from outside he hopped in. He went
first into the bedroom section, came out looking pleased then he went to
every corner, nook and cranny, burrowing under hay and bedding, clearly
checking for other residents. Once he realized that it was all his, his eyes
glowed, and he jumped into the roof of the bedroom (still his favored resting
place) with his eyes glowing bright pink. If rabbits can smile, he was smiling.
Throughout the following week he became very possessive of his new home. His
routine was quickly established, His cage door is left open throughout the
day so that he could run free around our large conservatory which has plants
growing in soil patches and a miniature which he quickly claimed as his water
hole. In that first week he laid down his own rules, none of our other pets
were allowed near his cage, even the cat was chased away. When I cleaned the
cage each day he seemed upset at me disturbing his hay and bedding. A few
weeks later all this had changed and instead he would watch me work, then
'tidy everything up' into the positions he wanted, which he still does.
Because of his pink eyes, he is vulnerable to bright light so we could not
let him live outside. His home is in the conservatory and in the house at
night. In the mornings he is always agitating and rattling the bars of his
cage until the door is opened and he can leap out to start another day. He is
stubborn about his routine and remains a rabbit with attitude but has become
a wonderful pet, very gentle and loving. His looks make him a pet with the 'Wow!' factor.
