Hermione
is a captive bred female Blue Bar Ambilobe Panther Chameleon. She is
hand fed, friendly and loves to climb on people. Her species is native to a
small region in northern Madagascar. Unlike males, female Panther Chameleons
do not display bright colors, but are usually brown or a soft orange and
pink. Her color changes with her mood. Hermione will find her way to the
front of the cage whenever she sees me coming and quickly climb on my hand if
I offer it to her. If I let her, she will eventually climb up my arm and find
her way to the top of my head.
I named her after Shakespeare's Hermione, the Queen of Sicilia, wife to King
Leontes, and the mother of Mamillius and Perdita. Her nurturing nature is
admirable as she displays love without weakness and maintains her composure
without pride or coldness. After going through her journey of experiencing
shame, degradation and grief, the character Hermione keeps a calm exterior.
She is one of my favorite fictional characters so my chameleon got her name.
Panther Chameleons should never be exposed to temperatures below 65 degrees (18 C).
Hermione lives in a 2 feet x 4 feet (61cm x 122cm) mesh enclosure full of tropical plants and
vines. Good ventilation and moderate to high humidity are very important and
can be challenging in the winter. She spends the day "patrolling" her
territory, climbing and crawling along the vines. She uses her tail as a
fifth limb, wrapping it around branches and vines as she climbs. We had
temperatures over 70°F (21 C) the other day, so I took her outside, and had a hard
time convincing her she needed to return inside! Pennsylvania is not
Madagascar om terms of weather!
