Introducing
the newest members of the family, Larry, Curly, and Moe, the baby
red-eared slider turtles. I've only had them for a month, so they are still
afraid of me a little. The three of them are hard to tell apart on top.
Curly's shell is different from the other two, more of a design. Moe has a
little black dot on the left side. Underneath it is easier; Larry has the
biggest design and Moe the smallest, so Curly is in the middle.
As with all animals, they each has their own personality. Larry is the brave
one, he is the last to jump off of the basking platform when I come near.
Larry and Curly stay together most of the time. Moe likes to be by himself.
However at breakfast time, they all get together. When we wake up in the
morning, I turn on their light and feed them. They all come to the top for that.
These turtles are excellent swimmers and can grow to be ten to twelve inches (25 - 30cm) in
length. They are now in a 40-gallon aquarium equipped with filter, heater,
basking platform, plants and gravel. They started out in a ten-gallon tank,
being so small they are much harder to find in the bigger tank. Larry and
Curly still stick together, but Moe likes to hide in the plants.
These turtles can live 30 years, so I have tried to make arrangements for
someone to take care of them when I'm gone. People need to consider that.
Right now, I just enjoy watching them swim and bask in the light with their
legs sticking out to keep them even warmer.
