Xena Warrior Princess, the Pet of the Day
Name: Xena Warrior Princess
Age: Seven months old
Gender: Female
Kind: Nigerian Dwarf Goat
Home: New Jersey, USA

Xena was born very tiny, one pound at birth, and underdeveloped. It was touch and go with her the whole way, but she had a spark about her that demanded she be given every chance to fight and survive. Ginger, her beautiful momma, was blessed with three babies, Pinocchio, Bambi and Xena. Her siblings were bigger and stronger than little Xena. They had no problems nursing and getting around, but poor Xena needed a angel on her side if she were to survive and Ginger knew it.

That angel is Danielle, a very good friend of mine. She knew, once she saw Xena, it would take a miracle if she was to beat the enormous odds against her. Danielle and her family were there for Xena, no matter what it took. Danielle's knew she needed a strong name and Xena Warrior Princess fit her nicely. Xena wasn't strong enough to hold her head up to nurse, Danielle was there to do that for her, every time. This tiny little bundle of love fought so hard to survive, she wanted to live. But without Danielle's dedication and love, she wouldn't have had a chance. Xena is truly a miracle, she had the will to live and now celebrates life as a permanent resident at Danielle's family farm.

Danielle here, Xena was born absolutely tiny and weak. It was a battle to get her temp high enough so she could digest milk, and after that I discovered she could not lift her head at all - it hung by her feet. So I ran out every two hours, round the clock, to support her body and head as she nursed from her momma. Very slowly she gained strength until she was able to nurse on her own. Unfortunately when she was four weeks she still had the body of a normal newborn kid - but the appetite of a four week old. As such, she actually overate and became extremely ill. She was what goat raisers call "down". She was lying down, fluffed up, and grinding her teeth. For the second time, I really thought I was going to lose her. Thank God, we had activated charcoal on hand which cleaned out the toxins in her system, and she bounced back to health right away. After that I strictly monitored her feed intake until she was able to pace herself. ;)

Xena is very healthy now and my little baby. Her best friend is Twinkles, who is a few weeks older than her. I named her Xena after "Warrior Xena", to give her a strong name. She is a fighter. She adores people and all of her herd mates, but doesn't let anyone push her around - even though she's the smallest. She fancies herself in line for the Herd Queen throne. ;) She likes playing chase and climbing around her playset with Twinkles, but most of all she loves being loved on and showered with cuddles and kisses. While very affectionate, she is also independent. She isn't afraid of wandering off by herself if she wants to, or telling Twinkles when she needs space.

She reminds everyone who knows her what a gift life truly is.
