I
first bought Skeet from a bird store when he was a year old. He wasn't very
tame but I was confidant I would be able to calm him down with plenty of
time. After a few weeks he would sit on my finger and hang out on my
shoulder, but still would not let me pet him. Skeet seemed happy but I felt
like he needed a friend to play with and keep him company when I am not around.
I searched on Craigslist and found another Yellow Sided Green Cheeked Conure
for sale that was six months old. The owners had originally bought this bird
from a breeder but then found out they were allergic ... or so their story
went. I personally think they bought this bird and then realized how noisy he
was! When I drove to their house I was greeted at the door by an old man, he
barely spoke English so it was hard to understand him. I told him why I was
there and he told me to wait while he got the bird. About ten minutes later,
he opened up the door and was holding a sealed plastic bag with a bird in it
on his back. I gave him the money and then rushed to the car and ripped open
the bag. He took a couple of deep breaths and I knew he would be okay. I
decided to name him Ace. Despite his rough start in life he was very friendly
and let me pet him all over his body. When I introduced Skeet and Ace
together they got along perfectly and remain best buds. You'd never know they aren't brothers!
Skeet is more on the reserved side and is more comfortable with me than with
strangers, as Ace is fine with anyone holding him. Ace's favorite activity is
to play with anything and anyone... he even likes to play with my dog Ravin and
when I had a kitten named Toby Keith, Ace played with him as well. Ace's
favorite toys are Gatorade caps. Skeet's favorite activity would have to be
bathing. I first found this out when on the third day I owned him and he
hopped into my Betta bowl. My poor Betta had to hide in her castle while
Skeet flopped around in the water. It was too funny I couldn't stop him. He
ended up bathing for about ten minutes and then I cleaned the fish bowl out
after. Ace and Skeet live in a nice large parrot cage and have lots of
different perches and toys. They also have a little sleeping tent that they
tuck themselves into at night. Ace is very protective of his tent when he is
inside of it with Skeet. They also have a parrot play stand that's on wheels
so I can move it to whatever room I am in and they hang out. They both have
great personalities and aside from being a little noisy they make great little pets.
