Hello Everyone!
My name is Rodney and I'm a Dwarf Hamster. I'm different from other hamsters,
at least that's what mom says. I met mom one day while I was playing in my
cage at the pet store. My brothers were sleeping but I thought that was
boring. I was having a blast tossing my chew stick around the cage when mom
passed by. She must have thought I was cute because she picked me to go home with her.
I love my cozy spot. I have a wheel for running, tasty food and plenty of
fluff to dig in. Everyone wants to pet me and hold me which I really like.
People are always surprised that I don't bite, even if I am startled. I'm
happier if people warn me a bit before reaching a huge hand into my space,
though. I love being held and petted, especially around the ears. I've heard
that other hamsters are motivated by food, but not me. I like keeping myself
healthy by sticking to foods that are good for me. No sweet treats for this guy!
My ancestors come from central Asia and live in mountainous or semi-desert
areas. They were often found in human dwellings in the winter. In the 1700s,
people who saw my ancestors thought they were mice! (I think we're much
smarter) My wild counterparts tend not to fear people, in fact some stories
have said they are downright friendly. I suppose that's why people like
having us around as pets!
