Caspian
is my Black Australorp Large Fowl Rooster. I show my chickens,
and Caspian won Grand Champion of the junior Show at Ohio National. He
won over about 1,400 birds. :)
He was good for the judges, and behaves nicely at shows - he seems to
like them, and all the fuss that goes with getting ready for one!
Washing to get a chicken ready for a show, how you do it is take three
buckets, totes, tubs, etc. and fill them with water. (You may use a
sink as one of the tubs.) In the first bucket you put gentle dish
soap. In the second is a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar, and the third
is just water. Then you take the chicken, check it for parasites (if
it has parasites, it will be disqualified), and dip it in the first
tub, being careful not to dunk its head. Then you scrub their legs,
feathers, etc. and pull them out. Then you plunge them into the next
bucket, to get off the suds. Then the last is the rinse bucket, to
wash off any remaining suds, and the ACV. Then you pull them out,
gently squeeze their butt feathers, hocks, chest etc. and wrap them in
a towel. Then, if it is warm & dry, you put them outside, and they
will dry off. But if it is cold or wet, you must blow-dry them inside.
So as you see, it is quite a process, so you need a cooperative chicken!
Caspian is a friendly boy, and yet he is somewhat independent too, He
does not know any tricks, and he is not afraid to "speak" when he is
happy, excited, etc. He loves to hang out with his girls, and is
really the king of the coop.
Australorps originated in Australia (hence the name), and at shows
they are shown in the English class. Australorp Bantams are shown in
Single Comb Clean Legged (S.C.C.L), but as I said, Caspian is a Large
Fowl. They are Australian versions of Orpingtons (another English
breed) and Austral(ian) and Orp(ington) make Australorp. His mom's
name is Joashifina, His dad's name is Duke, and he has many siblings.
We bred him, and now we have chicks from him. We love Caspian!
