Leia
is a female Nubian Goat that turned one on March 13, 2014. Leia had a
rough start she was turned the wrong way on delivery and was born six hours
after her twin brother who was much larger and stronger than her. I had to
turn her so she could be born. Then she came on not breathing and I had to
revive her. My daughter was present during the delivery and helping me. My
daughter Kate is thirteen and she had to feed Leia with a syringe every couple
of hours even during the night. Leia lived in her bedroom in a rubber made
tote for awhile. Then Kate had to bottle feed her four times a day for months.
When Leia was strong enough, she finally took Leia to live with the other
goats, but she cried for Kate. Leia thinks she is a person, and not a
goat. She is loving and gentle and is good around little kids. Kate showed
Leia at the fair and also let a five-year-old Clover Kid in our club show her
and the little girl had never been around goats much and Leia did fine.
Leia is used for petting zoos and outdoor activity days at our school. She
recently had two beautiful twin daughters, and she and her daughters were
the most visited part of a petting zoo at our town's Shakespeare Festival.
Kate and Leia have a special bond and it is not usual to find Kate reading
in the barn to Leia or giving her kisses. To Kate, Leia is more than just
a goat. We have several other goats but none of them are like Leia.
