I
acquired Kitsune, a beautiful Snow White Ring-Neck Dove, when a local
boy showed up on my doorstep holding him. Kitsune had been attacked by a
cat and was in need of veterinary care, as he had a serious kitty-bite on
his wing. I took him to the vet, got him looked after, and he has been a
part of my family ever since. I have no idea where he came from. He is not
a wild bird. Although there are many native wild doves in North America,
Snow White Ring-Necks are a domestic bird and should never, ever, be
released into the wild. You are not making them happy and giving them
their freedom. They become easy prey for crows, cats, and everything else.
I suspect the reason I could never find Kitsune's previous owner is
because he was "given his freedom" by someone who did not understand what
a bad idea it was to let him go.
If you ever do not want your pet bird anymore, find someone to take it. Don't let it go.
Kitsune now lives in a big aviary in my yard with my other birds. I love
him to pieces, and he is so sweet and so tame. He loves cuddles, and he
loves to nibble mint, sage and oregano along with his regular diet of
seeds. I wish I could say he's very smart, but he's not. I've seen him
doing his mating dance for the crows that come to my yard, and I even once
saw him doing it for a cat. Maybe that was how he got bit the first time?
Maybe someone should tell him that "The Owl and the Pussy Cat" was just a
story, and he's not an owl. But I'm sure he would be happy to marry one if
the right one came along.
He has a beautiful little singing voice, and I love to listen to him. I
just don't understand why he insists on singing with his bottom in the air
and his head between his feet. You can see him doing this in his old cage
before we moved him into the aviary. I have no idea why he does half the
stuff that he does, but his soft voice and gentle clowning make him very,
very dear to me.
