Hi
my name is Libby and this is my friend Liberty. Liberty is a black and
white Holstein. On her left side there are some spots that make the number
17. I have been in love with cows forever. I used to live on a dairy farm and
every day I would go see the cows. So when I entered 4-h and learned that
every year there is an "Earn a Calf Essay" contest, I asked my parents if I
could enter. With some approval of my parents and encouragement from my
friends, Dairy Club leaders, and family I entered. After one month I got a
letter in the mail saying that I won! It was the best day of my life. In June
I got to meet her. She was born March 3rd 2013. I had to train her for fair
as soon as possible. When fair came Liberty and I placed 2nd in my class out
of 10 people! I am very proud of myself and her. She is one of the best
things that has ever happened to me!
She is very friendly but at first she will back away and then sniff you out
to see if you are a good person! Don't worry though she doesn't bite! After I
started training her and saying her name over and over again, I tried to call
her over and Liberty walked right up to me! All that work paid off. Cows like
to have the same exact schedule every single day. They do not like changes.
So on a normal day she would eat around 6-7 am. Then she will mess around and
play or rest. Late at night they get dinner and usually at 9-10 pm is when
she likes to lay down for the night. Liberty eats the same things every day,
unless she moves to a new pen and there is more or less of something in her
feed combination. But she always loves her beet pulp, it is always gone in five minutes!
