This
is my family's baby, Dusty. She is a one and a half year old Congo
African Grey Parrot. We recently adopted her here in Alaska. Dusty is special
to my family because, when we adopted her, she was very malnourished and a
very angry individual. She was mistreated by her owners as they would not
clean anything of hers to the point where she started to develop Bumblefoot;
and she was not given the positive attention needed to care for these lovely
birds. She didn't speak at all (which is very uncommon in such intelligent
birds) and she bit everyone.
I convinced my family that she needed our love to turn this grouch around. I
told them that I would be able to train her at first (since I am willing to
be bitten for the greater good) and since I work at a wild bird clinic, I
could help her with my experiences in veterinary care.
After the first week of having her she started speaking over fifteen words, she
only nibbles now when she wants to groom people, (she doesn't have a good
concept of how big she really is so her nibbles are still a bit shocking) and
the sores on her feet have been cured.
It has been a little over a month now and everyone is able to handle her and
pet her in the morning and before she goes to bed. She runs to people when
they have bottles so she can chew on the cap, and she loves cuddling on
people's shoulders.
She has shown my family and many others that with the right care, no pet is a
lost cause. She is a truly great companion for my family and we are so happy
to give her our love for many years to come.
