My
degus are called Sprocket and Widget, and I'll tell you more about
Sprocket. I purposefully got two slightly different colored degus as I was
nervous I'd mix them up. To most people, they look identical, but not to
me. Sprocket is the darker one. He's slightly harder to see at times as he
blends into the hut! I know I'm not supposed to have favourites, but Sprocket is my little favourite.
Sprocket is a fifteen-month-old neutered male and is a cheeky little thing. He
serves as a distraction from his brother, Widgit, by playing the cute
card. Sprocket will generally whistle and squeak at you from the cage door
while Widgit will climb out of the cage and out of the substrate catcher.
They know that I'm too soft with them and won't tell them to behave themselves.
Sprocket absolutely loves running in the Silent Spinner wheel (which,
generally, isn't so silent as he jumps into it and runs like a mad thing,
making it jiggle and hit off the cage) and his exercise ball. You can
easily tell the difference between the degus' exercise ball (apart from
color) is that Widgit's is almost chewed through and Sprocket's isn't.
Plus, Sprocket has a bad habit of ramming into you when he's out in it; I
know that they're intelligent rodents, but I'm not so sure about them
being homicidal rodents. (Not that getting bumped in ankle is fatal, it
just makes me think of bad (human) drivers on motorways!
Both of them are on a diet as they are slightly pudgy; they like their
veggies, fresh grass, dandelions and peanuts a little too much. They are
unusual pets (well, in the UK at least) and I adore them both!
I love spreading the word about degus. They're so funny to watch as they
just bounce all over the place. I tell everyone that they're fantastic
pets but they can be a bit difficult to handle at times.
