We
had Trixie, the darker bunny, from a local animal shelter five years
ago. She was a stray so nothing was known of her history but it was thought
she was approximately two years old. She lived with an older neutered male
named Dusty for two years before he passed away at nine years.
For four weeks Trixie was on her own, although she could see the other
rabbits through the chainlink fence. We decided to go to the animal shelter
at the weekend to see if there was a lonely male needing some company as
rabbits really should have a friend if possible. On the Thursday afternoon
we had a knock on our door and it was our post lady to say she had a rabbit
in her car. What had happened was she and a friend were walking their dogs
in the local park and their dogs surrounded 'something'. The lady went over
to investigate to find it was a rabbit keeping very still as it was
terrified. She picked it up and luckily the dogs had not harmed him. Her
friend suggested bringing him to us as she knew we had rabbits and thought
we would know what to do. We immediately informed our local vets and put
posters up in the park hoping that someone would be delighted to find their
lost rabbit. After three weeks no-one claimed him so we had him neutered,
waited for him to heal and named him Sunny.
We put aside a day to bond him with Trixie as bonding sometimes doesn't go
smoothly but as soon as these two saw each other it was love at first sight.
They have now been together for three years and love each other very much,
where one goes the other follows. They love to play with their wicker
basket toys and cardboard boxes and are always grooming one another.
We now believe Sunny was probably abandoned in the park but Fate intervened
when our post lady found him and brought him to us to his forever home. We
hope we will have many more years of sharing our lives with Trixie and Sunny.
