Garignak
the Chicken is very special to me because, along with my other
chickens, reminds me of each summer spent with newborn chicks. You may be
wondering why and how Garignak acquired her unique name. She is named
after a rock monster in the film "Galaxy Quest." According to this movie,
Garignak means rock. When Garignak was a chick, she was always the most
sturdy and strong in the entire brood.
This picture depicts her, during her first winter, sitting on her nest and
fluffing her feathers. She, along with other close members in her flock
often come and visit me while I am riding my horse. They are very friendly
chickens, as they have been handled from hatching.
Garignak's personality is relatively affectionate, as long as she is not
sitting on a nest. She does not know any tricks, but will come to her name
when called by someone she knows. She is a very curious bird, which
separates her from the other chickens immensely. When other chickens will
run away, she will often stay to inspect the problem! My sister and I have
always known she is special, and we plan to enter her in a fair next fall!
