Scarlet
is eighteen years old and lives with my wife and I in Bellingham
Washington. We just got her last Saturday from a friend's aunt who
couldn't take care of her anymore and knew that I used to have birds and I
would provide a good home for her. Scarlet is still settling in but is
really starting to open up. She is a sweet bird who just needs more time
to get used to her new surroundings. She nips here and there but lightly
compared to a week ago and even lets me pet her chest and under her wings.
So far she is super quiet with only a few squawks here and there but I'm
not sure how much longer that will last haha.
This is my first Eclectus and first larger bird at that. I actually didn't
even know what an Eclectus was when my friend told me about it. I
recognized what they looked like but that was it. I had about a week to
research the species and I was super excited. A normal day for Scarlet is
getting up around 7ish a.m. and having her bowl of fresh fruits and
veggies. She will ride around on my shoulder while I do morning chores or
whatnot and if I actually feel like cooking (which I never do, the Mrs.
takes care of me haha) Scarlet will get a scrambled egg which she
loooooovves. Then she goes back in her cage until one of us comes home
around 4-5 pm and she gets another bowl of fruits and veggies and the cage
door just stays open so she can come and go as she pleases. I put her on
her perch for a bit when I play Xbox just so she can get used to being
around me. She gets her last meal at around 8:30ish and after about 9:30,
she is in sleepy time mode.
The lady I got her from said that she talked every now and then, and never
if you were in the same room. Well, Scarlet is a chatter box and is a very
quick learner! Scarlet talks quite a bit and I was not expecting that. She
makes weird lazer sounds (gotta be from my games), and already says Hi to
our dog. She is always whistling too, especially if im in the bathroom or
another room doing chores, we just whistle back and forth. Even our puppy
is jealous of her, haha!
So far, I love the experience we have had together and I hope over time
she will be more comfortable with me and fully trust me.
