Carlotta
lives with me and my boyfriend in Richmond, Virginia and is an
awesome addition to our family. The photo below was taken after she had gone
through a molt, which is basically the spider equivalent of shedding. She's
got to be one of the most beautifully colored animals I've ever seen and is
actually very sweet for a tarantula.
Carlotta is a very independent spider but she is definitely
unique in the fact that most tarantulas of her species are very aggressive but
she's actually quite docile and doesn't mind being handled. She can be a
little curious and definitely loves eating crickets and other bugs. We feed
her about three times a week as tarantulas require very little nutrition to
survive and she can live up to as long as twenty years in captivity on just a few
crickets a week. She is a tree spider and doesn't like being on the ground
very much.
Carlotta is a Poecilotheria metallica which is a species of
tarantula from India that lives high in the trees. They get to be about seven to eight
inches at adult size so they're a pretty big spider. She's amazing to look at
and I love taking her to expos and pet conventions and showing everyone how
amazing she is.
