I
got Chepi and two other flying squirrels in the spring of 2010 in order to
continue with my flying squirrel hobby. Chepi means "fairy" in the Algonquin
Native American language. She indeed has a fairy-like charm about her.
Chepi is special because she was a good friend to the late
Scalisti
during the last year and a half of his life. While she is not tame
enough to be handled, she likes to take walnuts out of my hand. I can see it
in her big dark eyes that she will eventually trust me to the point of
handling when the time comes. When she's hungry, she lets me know by running
around in circles in the cage. Her food consists of seeds, nuts, and fruit
sprinkled with calcium powder. She also likes the occasional mealworm. She is
an interesting pet to have.
