This
is Daisy. She is almost three months old although this picture was
taken when she was roughly six weeks. She is a fancy rat that we got from
the feeder tank at a pet store. I got her for myself and my two daughters
age two and five for their first pet. I had a pet rat when I was in
college and knew that they were great pets.
Daisy has never bitten my children, although she does give "love nibbles."
She lives with her sister Daphne in her high rise cage. She loves our
family so much that any time anyone comes near her cage she jumps onto the
side of the cage and tries to poke her nose out as if to say, "Someone,
anyone, come play with me. I love you!" She is so loving, playful, and
gentle with my girls. Two-year-old children can sometimes have trouble
handling animals and I am astounded how tolerant she is of this. She seems
to just know that my two-year-old doesn't know any better and is doing the
best she can. She will play hide and go seek, peek a boo, and tug of war
with us when we get her out. She knows the word, "treat" and comes running
when we tell her she is going to get one. Rats really are great pets for
children... and adults too! Don't ever fall victim to the hype that they
are dirty, disease-ridden animals. Nothing could be further from their
truth. They really are like little dogs in ratty bodies. She is a special
little thing and we are lucky to have her.
