These
are my Eclectus parrots Rhett (Green) and Scarlett outside drying
off after shower. They do love the water, and also like being outside
where they can holler to their wild neighbors. Yes, they are the same
species, in these birds it is very easy to tell the males from the
females! The males are green, just like Rhett here, and the females are
the vivid red in contrast. Scarlett gets her name from her color, and so
of course her beau just had to be Rhett, like the characters in Gone with
the Wind. After all, living in Georgia, they are true Southerners!
They are both about two years old, and are friendly to our family as well as
bonded to each other. They are wary of visitors, though, and although
their bright colors are very attractive to small children, we keep the
birds cage when they visit, because those beaks could do serious damage to
small fingers. They get plenty of veggies and fruit, this can get messy,
but they are worth it. They also get dark greens like kale and spinach, as
well as their bird food, they would not do well on just seed, like people
think they could. We love Rhett and Scarlett, they add a cheerful presence
to our family every day!
