Meet
Little Star, my very special Guinea girl. Star was rescued from the
SPCA in August 2010, when she was two years old. After our cat, Lucy went
to the rainbow bridge in early June, the house just seemed so empty and
gloomy. After we talked about it, we decided to get a small animal friend,
since we didn't feel we were ready to face a new cat or dog. We went down
to the Moncton SPCA, and when I was looking at the small animals they had,
I came across Little Star. She just stole my heart the minute I saw her,
and I knew she was the one that had to come home with me. After a debate
about which animal to get, we finally settled on Star and she came home
with us. She's now very happy to have a loving home, though she's an only
piggy, we know she loves the attention!
Star is now three, her birthday was July 17 (her age and approximate
birthday were estimated by the SPCA and vet). And she has celebrated her
one year anniversary for being with us. She's a really...hungry girl. She
can eat anything we put in front of her, pretty non-lady like! I'm not sure
if she ever gets full! She gets a treat every night, consisting of
vegetables and the one piece of fruit that comes along once every week. I
would say some of her favorite vegetables are romaine lettuce, carrots,
grape tomatoes, parsley, celery, and corn husks. But her true favorite is
definitely Cucumber, no competition with that! When she comes out of her
cage every evening, she loves running laps around her huge playpen, hiding
in her tunnel, and chasing me around. In the summer, she loves going out on
the grass to run around, and eat some of it (untreated and good grass). We
also grow her some grass inside the house to eat. She can also climb the
stairs, especially when she knows there's a treat there! When she's not so
rambunctious, she likes to cuddle up in her nice bed that we got from the
SPCA when we adopted her. She loves it, and even falls asleep in it
occasionally! She also loves just being curled up in a towel and resting in
my arms.
Lil' Star is also pretty smart. She knows her name, and when I clap, snap,
or whistle she will come to me or follow wherever I'm going. Also, after a
great time of practice she learned to circle when I have a treat for her. I
hold the treat, and thrust it out in front of me, and she will circle for
it until I give it to her! It's adorable, but I sadly can't get a video
because she seems to be camera shy. I was lucky to get the four photos of
her! Also, her full name is Little Star, but we also call her Lil' Star,
Pretty Girl, Cutie, Sweetie, Baby Girl, or just simply... Star!
Star and I would like to encourage anyone who is looking for a new animal
friend to first check out any rescues such as the SPCA, Humane Society, or
any non-profit organization in your area. Pet store animals aren't bad, but
why buy when you can rescue an animal in need of a second chance too?
Wherever you live, shelter animals can always make amazing pets too, no
matter what species! If you live in New Brunswick, or Moncton like us, here
is a link to the Moncton SPCA
and New Brunswick SPCA.
Thank you from me and Lil' Star!
