Meet
Iris, my eleven-year-old Hyacinth Macaw. She is the sweetest, most
well-behaved bird I know. I got Iris when she was just a baby, and it was
love at first sight for me. I researched about Macaws, and started
training her. After all that, she became my best friend. She now trusts
me, and we do everything together. I still don't know how she even ended
up in Minnesota, since they aren't common around here. Iris has learned
many things, I taught her how to say simple things like "Hello" and "Hi
there". She even picked up on other words and can say "I want my food" and
she says "Good morning" to me pretty much every morning. She's slowly
learning a game I'm trying to teach her too. Iris loves to perch on my
shoulder and go about my day with me, she sits on the table when I'm
eating, and she eats with me. She watches T.V with me, she reads with me
and more.
I built her a ladder in my room, so every morning she walks down it and
sits on the chair beside my bed waiting for me to wake up. She never used
to be good at flying, because one of her wings was in very bad condition
for a long time. It healed, and she's started flying. But because she grew
up having to walk, she flies sometimes but she mostly walks around the
house unless she really wants to get to me. She's developed such a bond
with me that like most birds, she won't fly away when I let her outside or
even try to. She doesn't even go to sleep until I tell her I'm going to, also.
I've had eleven wonderful years with her, and I hope for many more.
