This
is Cotea, when he was a ten-month-old foal. He was born in the wild
on Assateague Island, Virginia. Each year my family vacations in
Chincoteague Virginia. Chincoteague is a small island off the Delmarva
Peninsula. It is known for the famous pony swim from Assateague to
Chincoteague.
As a child I was fond of the "Misty of Chincoteague" books and always
wanted to go to the pony swim. My parents took me when I was 5 but all I
remember is getting lost at the swim! Later my husband and I made regular
trips to Chincoteague and he surprised me in 2003 by purchasing Cotea at
the Annual Chincoteague Fireman's Auction. When we got him he was wild.
Slowly, we began to approach and touch him. This took much patience on my
part, as I so wanted to pet him! Together we raised and trained Cotea to
ride.
Cotea now lives in Mahwah, NJ at Three Sisters' Farm. In his first year we
taught him how to go over obstacles, walk nicely on a lead line, trot, and
get his hooves trimmed. He was basically learning good etiquette until he
is older. As you can see, he loves a good roll in the sand from time to
time, it looks so silly!
Cotea is a one-of-a kind pony with a wild heart. Watching him grow has
been an experience I will never forget. Now he is almost eight years old. He
is a great pony who loves people and other horses. In fact, he shares a
field with two other Chincoteague ponies too. His name is derived from the
word Chincoteague. You can see his name is the word. He is very friendly
and enjoys being around people and horses. He is ridden English and has
been in a local parade and on trail rides.
