Aslan
is our Red-footed Tortoise, and he's an older gent - he is already 46
years old. The books say they can live to 50 and some say even beyond, and
he seems no different than he did two years ago, so we hope he is still
with us for a long time, and proves those books right. We have only owned
him for two years - we adopted him from a family that could not longer
care for him.
Unlike some tortoises, his kind do not hibernate, so of course he lives
inside, especially as we live in Minnesota. He loves strawberries,
cantalope, and grapes and prefers Spring Mix to any other greens, and gets
his tortoise food. And he occassionally enjoys a small amount of ground
turkey. Redfooted Tortoises are one of the few tortoises that also need
protien so they are actually omnivores, not herbivores like other
tortoises.
Aslan is special because he enjoys walking around the house. When he wants
a strawberry or other special treat he rams into the fridge until we give
him a treat. So while he may not be able to bark like a dog, or meow like
a cat, he certainly can communicate! That thumping can be quite loud, and
gets results every time, so I guess he has us well trained. He loves to go
outside in the summer and rummage around the yard (with supervision of
course). And he loves having warm baths every week - in fact he will often
blow bubbles under the water to entertain himself! He is quite a quirky
dude and we love him tons!
