   I would like to place in nomination my Cockatoo Christine Dijon, and there are a multitude of things that make her a very special bird! I think it would be best if I let her tell you her bittersweet story herself, as follows;

    Hi, my name is Christine (Christy) Dijon, I am a twenty-year-old Citron Crested Cockatoo, and I live in Rock Island, Illinois with my dad, Jenny Lynn, an Orange Winged Amazon, and Arthur Alex, a fabulous Congo Grey! I have lived with my dad for fifteen years, and right now my life just couldn't be any better, but that has not always been the case!

    When my first owner passed away, I was sent to live with the son, and he hated me, and he severely mistreated me! I was forced to live in a dark damp basement with no human interaction, and was rarely fed more than once a week, but the most horrendous part was living in total darkness, without ever seeing the sunshine! I became very bitter and I would scream for somebody to come and play with me, but he just threw things at me, and cussed at me! I thought my life was destined to be this way forever, but then one day, there was dad standing there, as big as all outdoors, and he said "Christine is coming with me, right now!" By that time, I was so traumatized that I refused human touch, and I would bite my dad, and hiss at him, and this went on for years! However every time Dad was about ready to give up, he realized that he was my last chance at having a good life, so he would come home from work at lunch time to spend time with me, and sit on a stool and talk to me morning, noon, and night, but I would still bite him really hard!

    Even Dad was getting to the point of giving up, but then one noon hour I walked over to where dad was resting his arm on my cage, and I stepped up on his arm! Fearful of getting bitten again, he just talked softly and petted me and held me for the first time in nearly 8 years! I so clearly remember him holding me tight with big ol' tears running down his face and on me, and from that time forward, I have never bit him again! He can not explain what happened, and while he thanked God for answering his many prayers, he is convinced that I was touched by an Angel, and that is how I got my new nickname, Angel Wings!

    By the way, I do not like being in my cage, and I have literally not been inside of it for fourteen years for any reason! Now my dad and I are the very best of friends, although I am fully flighted and can fly like a rocket, he comes and gets me in the mornings for our walk around, where I get to look outside the windows and sun room and see the beautiful sunlight! Then every day, I get fresh food, and water, and fresh fruits and vegetables! I was so mistreated and abused, that I have never spoken a word, but my dad and I communicate very well, we are each other's best buddies for life, and while I know that this page is dedicated to Pet of the Day nominees, if there was a category for dad of the day, I would select mine! Thanks for listening to my story!

   With all my love,
   Christy Angel Wings
