Nimrod
is a Crested Gecko, and he was named after the sea creature on the
shortlived TV series "Surface." It seemed to fit his goofy personality.
While his brother Raptor was a calm and passive gecko growing up, Nimrod was
flighty and loved to jump.
Crested Geckos can come in a variety of colors and patterns. While they were
very similar in appearance when young, Nimrod kept his nice chocolate brown
appearance (and added spots) while Raptor is now a pretty yellow with some
striping and spots.
When Nimrod was around two years old, he dropped his tail. This is a
survival mechanism in the wild. In captivity, they can drop their tails
for a number of reasons including fear, mating, attacks from tank mates,
or simply just because they obviously thought it was a good idea, though
you're left scratching your head when none of the prior listed reasons
fit! laughs. Unlike some species of gecko, though, Cresteds will not
grow their tails back, so you are left with what is fondly called a 'Frog
Butt.' It took some time to for us get used to Nim's new look, but it suits him.
Each gecko I have has its own unique 'personality' of sorts. Nimrod was
pretty flighty but he seems to have mellowed some with age. And we love him
just as he is.
