This
is our wonderful part of our aquarium hobby. I named her Bela,
after Bela Lugosi, the actor who made Dracula famous in the old black and
whites. She doesn't seem to mind being named after a boy.
Isn't she just the cutest fish you've ever seen? We aren't sure how old she
is, but I know that she is at least four years, as this is how long we've had
her. This type of fish is a hybrid and there is much controversy over them.
They are bred to look this way and part of the problem is that they cannot
close their mouths entirely. It doesn't seem to be a problem for Bela at all
and it certainly adds to her cuteness. She eats just fine. She also moves the
pebbles and plants around her tank to suit her, she's her own decorator, and
takes this job seriously.
Some people actually think these fish are ugly? I don't, I think she is
adorable I can't settle the debate over the breeding practices because they
are so secretive and I'm not a fish breeder (not to mention a biologist).
However, I think I can voice a strong "no way" when it comes to criticism of
this fish's appearance and personality. She is terrific! She even follows us
when we walk past. She knows us, and will take a flake of food or a pellet
right out of our hands. She can tell the difference between us and visitors,
and while she is curious about them, would not take food from them. She has
certainly become a much beloved pet and I hope she is with us for a very long
time. Some people don't think fish have personalities, well, they have never
met Bela!
She is a beautiful fish - who, I think, dreams of being a dog. She literally
follows us around (as far as she can in the tank), particularly my husband.
If you put your face to the glass, she will wiggle and "kiss" the glass where
your face is. Everyone loves her.
