On
April 15, 2008 we decided to take my nieces to the park to feed the ducks.
I usually bring a long extra duck food and feed as many ducks as I could. That
day a mother muscovy and four ducklings were enjoying the sun and eating some of
the food that I had brought, when all of the sudden one of the big males
chased the mother muscovy from her chicks. The four babies huddled together
waiting for mom again when all of the sudden a big crow swooped down and took
one of them. I watched in shock for a moment and then snapped out of it. I ran
towards the crow screaming at him to let go, till he finally perched a top a
high tree, still clutching the baby muscovy with his beak. We then started
throwing rocks and sticks at the crow hoping he would come down. All the
sudden, the crow let go of the baby and he came crashing down a 20+ feet fall.
The baby got up and tried to run away frightened I quickly picked her up and
covered her with my shirt. She seemed fine but I thought she would have some
internal injuries from the fall. I took her home to keep an eye on her, I
figured she would pass on soon.
Now a year later, Beeker has become a beautiful female muscovy duck with a big
attitude problem! She and my other duck Tuwee have since become friends,
although they do like to keep their distant at times.
