Mustard
the duck, oh what a story we share. We met on a small farm, in the
small city of Stillwater, Oklahoma. This farm belonged to my grandfather. All
the animals were different, horses, dogs, cats, geese, donkeys, chickens,
guineas, peacocks, goats, pigeons, ducks and one big tom turkey. All the
animals I saw were amazing, but there was one small soul that stood out to me.
My grandfather gave me permission to have anything I wanted. I looked and
looked. Nothing seemed to speak to me, or want to be my friend. The day was hot,
I was tired. I went inside to relax. When I walked towards the kitchen, a
small chirp seemed to come out of nowhere. I looked around, and there was a
lighted box that I had not noticed before.
I looked in, and five sets of eyes peered back at me. They were curious little
things, fluffed up like little cottonballs. Ranging from yellow to brown, all
different. All special in their own way. I reached in. Their curiousity soon
turned to confusion, all scattering away, all but one.
My hands felt the softness of his small body, his scaly feet, soft to the
touch. His bright eyes met mine and I smiled. I sheltered him with my hands,
offering him warmth and support. We sat in front of the television, at this
point, I had forgotten why I was even going to the kitchen.
I opened my hands, placing him in my lap, thinking I was letting him run free.
But instead, he sat, yawned, and fell asleep. From this moment on I knew we
would be the best of friends. His friendship would be different from any
animal I had known. He was different.
Mustard is my tiny little best friend. I have spent every single day of his
ten weeks of life loving him, being his mother, and most of all his friend. He
has moved from a farm in the middle of nowhere, to a city full of cars and
school children.
He wears diapers, (made by Nancy Townsend of course!) and spends 75% of his
time inside. He doesn't like water, which is ironic because he is a duck.
Mustard is very intelligent, a lot more intelligent than most people think.
Most of all, he is beautiful on the inside as well as out.
Mustard is my favorite person, and I think if anyone deserves to be Pet of the
Day, it's a little duck with a big heart and a kind soul.
