This
is our wonderful bunny, Winnie. He was born on July 08, 1997 - twelve years
ago! We acquired Winnie along with his sister, Peewee as baby bunnies. Peewee
was named Peewee as she was the runt of the litter. Winnie was named after
Winston Churchill, not Winnie the Pooh. Even as a baby Winnie demonstrated his
intelligence. When we were training him not to bite the carpet we would say
"no" and put our hand under his mouth as he tried to bite the carpet. Winnie
was determined to bite the carpet and was just as determined to get away with
it. He did this by looking directly at me, biting the carpet and jumping at
the same time. Very cute!
Peewee died of a tumor after only one year. Winnie was left alone for a time
and he hated it. Sometime later we paired him with a female rescue rabbit by
the name of Frankie. They quickly bonded and became inseparable - ate, slept
and used the box together. About five years ago when Winnie was seven, Frankie
passed away. Since that time he has become very close to my wife and I and we
feel he relishes being the solo bunny in the house.
He will sit on the floor between my legs while I watched television,
sometimes for an hour or two at a time. He loves Cheerios as a treat and he is
fed fresh vegetables three times per day. All of the rabbits we have had have
never been caged and had free roam of the first floor of the house.
Both of these pictures are when he was nine years old. He has since developed
cataracts and has trouble getting around because of it. His health is
diminishing and we realize he is in the twilight of his life. We are very
grateful that he chose to live such a long life with us and know how lucky we
have been. You're the best Winnie!!
