This
is Hieba the Hermit Crab a.k.a. "Berry Sweet." Her name is pronounced
'HI-BAH' and she is a Strawberry Hermit Crab (Latin name is Coenobita perlatus).
Once I got into 'crabbing', I knew I'd get addicted. I was already mom to
a tank of seven Purple Pinchers but always wanted a Strawberry Hermit to call
my own. They are hard to find in Michigan, so when the local Petco began
advertising them, I didn't hesitate to look.
Among all the little Purple Pinchers was one lone Strawberry. I was hooked
by her stunning color and instantly took her home. Unlike many of my
Purple Pinchers, little Hieba lives up to her nickname of 'Berry Sweet.'
She seems to like being held and has yet to pinch (though I can't rule it
out ever happening, it seems unlikely!). Hieba loves to bask in the sun
(on her short trips outside), soak in her salt water bowl, and pretty much
spends her time "redecorating" the tank.
Hieba is named after a character in E. E. Knight's 'Age of Fire' series. We
chose it as a unique name for a very special and unique crab.
