This
is Smokey Bear. He is one and a half years old and he is a sugar glider and
my best friend. I got Smokey on February 7, 2009 but we knew each other way
before then. I rescued him from a home who wanted nothing to do with him and
didn't care if he lived happily or not. Ever since Smokey came into my house
he's learned so much, now I can stand across the room and call his name and he
will come gliding over to me and hide in my shirt. Smokey is such a
sweetheart, he and I really understand each other. If he is with me and I
start crying because im upset, he will come out of my hoodie or his pouch and
come and see what's going on. He is the one I come to with all my problems
and he's always there for me and I love him with all my heart and I know he loves me.
Sugar gliders are from Australia and are colony animals. In the wild they
live in groups of possibly 30 or more so I went out and bought him a friend
because if you don't get a single glider a friend, they are known to get very
depressed and develop health issues. They are also nocturnal so the whole time
I'm up, he's sleeping like a little baby which makes carrying him around a lot
easier. But Smokey is relatively hard to care for because sugar gliders
require a lot of attention and care and they have to be on a special "sugar
glider" diet that you usually have to hand make. There isn't a pellet out there
that gives them all the nutrition that they need. He usually has fruits and
vegetables every night, with the special food I make for him called BML, I
don't know what it stands for, but I know it's good for him. He doesn't really
care to much about vegetables but neither do I, so it's okay. His favorite treat
that I give him is grapes, he peels off the skin and eats the fruit out of the
middle, it's so cute.
Smokey also has an amazing personality, he makes me laugh all the time. Every
night when I put him up in his cage. he turns around and barks at me. It's
hilarious, it sounds just like a little puppy. I'm told that they do that to
call their colony, so I'm assuming that he thinks I'm a sugar glider and part of
his colony, so cute!! Another thing that's cute that he does is, at night I
take him into a tent and we have "play time" where I bring in all sorts of
toys (mostly bird toys) and hang them up all over the tent and he jumps and
leaps from toy to toy and runs around on the floor with his tail stuck up in
the air. It sounds weird, but it's so cute. He also loves feather teasers, he
could chase them all day.
