My
turtle is called Lucky and she's eight years old, she's a testudo
hermani in Latin I think - Herman's Tortoise in English. Currently we
both live in Slovakia, but her country of origin is Greece.
Lucky is special because she made few people think that turtles are
cute, she can make you change your mind! Lucky doesn't seem to know her
name, but she recognizes voices, so she knows when I'm talking to her
and when it's my mother, for example.
Her personality is not so complicated I think. She likes to watch me
doing something, when I put her out of the terrarium and I am for
example vacuum cleaning, she's near me and is watching. Or when she's
sitting on my table, she always watches me typing on the keyboard. This
made me laugh so hard when I saw it for the first time!
She's afraid of storms. Sometimes when the storm outside is really
strong, she wakes up in the middle of the night and is trying to "get
out of the terrarium" so then I put her out and lay her on my table in
front of me and she stares at my fingers (as mentioned above).
She knows when she's on some high place. When she's sitting on the
washing machine and comes to the edge, she always takes few steps back,
because she knows it's too high for her, some kind of instinct.
Lucky knows how the vet clinic smells. She used to pee from fear when
we'd entered the room. Now she's grown older and acts calmer.
One of her favorite activities is taking walks. We moved to house with a
garden this year, so I take her for walks during the sunny days in
summer. I sit there and read some book, while she is eating all kinds of
food. Her favorite one is dandelion leaves and flowers. She simply loves
those! She can make me really happy!
Tortoises in general are not difficult to take care of. Bathing time is
once a week or less, and else is just the feeding, twice a day. And she
eats all kinds of vegetables and fruits, of course she's a spoiled brat
so she chooses. Her favorites are tomatoes, strawberries (all kinds of
berries, basically), dandelions, and oranges.
