I
would like to introduce you to the newest member of our horse family,
our baby filly, Annie, shown here at three days old! She is always
close to her momma Sam, who is a registered Belgian mare. Sam came to
us three years ago with many behavior and physical problems, but with
constant work and attention has become the most sweet-tempered, easy
going sweetheart horse around. She and Annie share their home with
our two quarter horse mares, and a Percheron gelding named Flanders.
Sam had had four babies before she came to us, so she was basically a
brood mare we rescued, but now, with this darling baby, she will get to
keep her for her life, as we do not sell our horses. Once they come to
our farm, they stay forever. Sam was allowed to have her baby anywhere
she felt comfortable having her, and she picked a nice nest of tall,
soft grass near the pond and had her baby early in the morning of June
14th, Flag day! We believe it is best to let horses be horses and have
their babies on their own. But we still watch them very closely. Sam had
absolutely no problems because she is a pro, and her baby filly Annie is
just breathtaking to us.
Annie has thrived since she was born, and now, at just three months old,
can already follow verbal commands without any lunge lines or leads, and
she lets us halter her and lead her whenever we want. Such a smart baby!
She is going to be a huge Belgian, however, so we wanted to get our bluff
in early with her! She adores my husband, follows him all over the barn
and the corral, and she prefers her carrots shredded, rather than whole.
My goodness, what a princess!
Is this a sweet baby or what? We look forward to seeing her grow in the
months and years ahead. For now, of course, she still sticks pretty
close to her momma Sam.
