Here
is a member of our "zoo" as we call our house... this is
Speedette. She is a six year old Eastern Box Turtle. We rescued her
when she was smaller than a quarter. She needed a good home, and so
has lived in our house in a special terrarium in Wanchese, NC ever since.
She's a special part of our family. She's not furry or cuddly, but
she's cool. She reacts to the family's different voices differently,
and is not bothered by our cat or dog or the noises they make. She is
pretty calm, nothing much bothers her, we can tell, because when
frightened, box turtles can retreat inside their shells. We decided to
build a nice, spacious outdoor habitat for her this summer, so she can
enjoy the sun and nice weather of the Carolina summer - after all, the
Latin name for her species is "Terrapene carolina."
Although we love her and have her as a pet, turtles and tortoises don't
generally make good pets for just anyone. They need a lot of special
care. They need a varied diet, the right food, and right temperature
conditions. Please do your research before getting one!
