I
was in the line at Wal Mart waiting to check out and talking about my
guinea pigs to my mom. The girl behind the counter turned to me and
excitedly said, "You have guinea pigs?? Do you want another one?" As we
continued talking, it was clear that her piggy she was trying to give
away had a terrible home. The piggy hadn't been out of her cage for over
two weeks! Being the lover of all animals (especially piggies!) that I
am, I knew I had to rescue this poor pig. I drove over to pick up the
piggy. She weighed about one pound (whereas my other two piggies weighed a
healthy three pounds - hence the name we gave her - Peanut) and was so tiny! I
thought she was a baby but the girl assured me she was about two. When I
got her home and looked her over it was obvious that she was in poor
condition. Her feet and nails were caked with dirt from being stranded
in her cage for so long. She had fungal infections on her ears, and she
kept coughing. I took her to the vet the following day and got her on
antibiotics for her cough and infections. I am happy to say that after
all of that, she is up to about 2.5 pounds and healthy!
She is so special to me because she is my little miracle. I didn't know
if she would make it after her previous living conditions and
respiratory infection. She is such a little cuddler and loves to give me
kisses on my nose! She loves her sisters (Pumpkin and Pixie). They say
that guinea pigs don't like to cuddle with other piggies, but every time
I come home from work she is curled up in the corner with one of her
sisters! Peanut is such a wonderful little animal and should be pet of
the week for her strength and the love she gives to me everyday!
