Maximillian
(Max for short) is a seven-year-old Timneh African grey
parrot. He lives with me and my husband in northern Michigan. Max came to
me as a four-week-old baby, whom I finished hand-feeding. I had raised Congo
greys, but had never raised a Timneh, and let me tell you, what
extraordinary personalities they have!
Max is such a joy. He has a vocabulary of at least 200 words, although it
is hard to keep track because he is always mixing up words to make new
sentences. He loves his toes...he will kiss his toes on command. He
will hold up his foot and say, "Birdy toes!" And he doesn't just
mimic...everyone who knows him is fully convinced he knows what he
is saying. For example, one day he flew out on to the kitchen counter, a
place he knows full well he is not supposed to be. I heard him fly, walked
out into the kitchen, put my hands on my hips, and said "Max!" He
immediately replied, "You're not supposed to be here!" When he hears my
husband John in the kitchen in the morning, he says, "Breakfast with
Johnny?" When I change his water (he dunks his food in it and I change it
several times a day), he will say, "Gross!" and then "Fresh water?" and
then "Thank you!" My friends all tell me that, while they love to see me,
they really come to see Max! He is becoming well known, and people who
have seen and heard him tell stories far and wide. He is my little darling
(he says that too ... "My darling!")
