I
was never a "bird person". We had had them as kids and I loved them
but never really felt the same kind of feelings as I did with our dogs,
etc.
Skip to 25 or so years later... I was living on my own and really wanted
a dog. My apartment complex didn't allow them and I felt guilty about
living in a small space with one anyways. My best friends had birds.
Just like as a kid, I just didn't feel anything towards them. I wasn't a
"bird person."
My friends had bought a baby green cheek conure and it was so friendly
and cute that I couldn't help but play with it - they also had Watson,
a 25-year-old White-Eyed Conure who they had rescued and gave a better life.
They kept telling me, "you love animals, I promise you will love birds,
i can't believe you don't want one!" The more lonely I got the more I
started thinking about their little green cheek and the love Watson
needed that both they and I could give him... and suddenly I was
contemplating getting a bird.
I did my research "just in case I decided to get one" and found that a
Sun Conure fit the description of a bird I could get on board with.
We went to the local bird store who just happened to have baby sun
conures. I played with Teagan and when she let me hold her and fell
asleep against my chest and let me put a birdie sombrero on her head...
I knew I had to have her.
My friends loaned me all the money for her, the cage, toys, food - the
whole bit and I brought her home that day. This little ball of feathers
has changed my life. I love her so much and can't imagine life without
my bird. I recently adopted Watson, which has been great and now just
wish I could have more and more birds! Teagan not only filled a void in
my life, she also made me an official "bird person". She is always my
pet of the day and I would like to share her for a day with others. :)
