I
would like to tell you about my very special pet, Captain Jack. He's
an eight-month-old hairless rat that lives with us in Orlando, Florida.
Before Captain Jack, I vowed to stay away from pet stores because I
never wanted to leave the rats there all alone. One day back in
February, though, we were near a pet store after lunch and decided to go
in. "We've barely got room for the four hairless rats and the mouse
that we already have," I reasoned. I felt it wouldn't be difficult to
convince myself not to buy a single rat since, unlike when I bought my
twin boys, I wouldn't be worried about littermates being separated. I
knew we didn't have room for another pair of rats, either, so I felt
relatively confident I could manage to keep my wallet shut.
And then... fate intervened. At first, we quickly scanned the cages and
found no sign of rats. I breathed a sigh of relief. Then I noticed a
small tank on the counter with the sign: "One-eyed Willie, the Hairless
Rat. Free with purchase of $25 of supplies". Oh, man, how was I
supposed to pass up a one-eyed hairless rat? Who would love him if I
didn't take him home? I knew as soon as I read the sign that it was
meant to be. One-eyed Willie was waiting for me.
Obviously, that name would just not do. We brought him home and renamed
him Captain Jack. He's a pi-rat. For the first few months he was very
skittish, having presumably lost his eye fighting with other rats.
Recently, though, he has warmed up to us and seems to be enjoying his
personal suite, free from further aggression. Despite his slight vision
irregularity, he is just as sweet and as curious as our other rats. We
are so glad to count him as part of our family!
