Lamar
is a Quaker Parrot and we think he is about six months old. We
spotted Lamar in the middle of a busy city street in 5:00 traffic. I saw
him in the center turn lane as I drove by and said "It's a bird in the
middle of the road!" My ten-year-old daughter insisted we had to turn
around and go back. Turning around on a busy street in 5:00 traffic in
Austin is nuts, but we did!
As we drove back, I didn't see him (thankfully!). He had managed to hop
to the side, and I spotted his head peeking up in the grass as we drove
by slowly. I jumped out, covered him with a t-shirt and scooped him up.
After a trip to the Zookeepers Exotic Pet store, we determined his leg
was probably injured but he looked pretty healthy. The next morning we
took him to the vet. He did had a broken leg and his air sac was
leaking. Have you ever seen a bird xray? Interesting! He now has a
little cast and hops around like crazy. Everyone at the Vet's loved him
and could not believe a wild bird was being so calm. He seems to know we
rescued him.
We tried feeding him pellets but he much prefers what the vet called
junk food! He loves dried fruit, rice and even some scrambled eggs. But
he insists on being hand fed. He will sit quietly with my daughter and
watch TV but he does not like being cooped up.
We don't know whether Lamar is a girl or boy and were told it would
require blood tests or surgery to determine. We decided we could wait...
and his name... Lamar, is the name of the street where we found him.
Right here in Austin, Texas, USA.
