is a wonderful little lady who wandered into our community some
four years ago at Thanksgiving. After some time of finding what to feed
this pretty girl we found she likes to just peck at the earth and nibble
on fallen bird seed. Chicken Little lives in a large community of ducks
and geese and somehow has managed to survive and live peacefully among
the others. She will lay eggs but, having no rooster they never hatch.
Yet, her maternal instinct is so strong that she periodically will move
a mother duck off her nest and take over as mid-wife.
The two young ducks pictured with her are two of three hatchlings she
hatched. They follow her everywhere and look puzzled as to why their mom
is the only one who won't go in the pond for a swim! I even wonder if
the babies can swim since their mom does not!
Needless to say, Chicken Little causes quite a stir in the neighborhood
and thankfully she has survived the taunting of naughty, curious
children (who get quickly reprimanded). Even the ducks move aside when
Chicken Little strolls by. She is a sweet and beautiful creature and I
hope to enjoy the pleasure of her company for many years!
