Rascal, the Pet of the Day
Name: Rascal
Age: Eight months old
Gender: Male
Kind: Ferret
Home: Southern Maryland, USA

Rascal came into our lives shortly before Halloween. Having always been "dog people", we did a lot of research to make sure we knew what to expect from owning a ferret before purchasing him. Everything we read helped us prepare for a lot of work in litter box training & ferret-proofing our home, but we were certainly not expecting to fall head over heels in love with this amazing little creature.

He has been a delightful pet and is incredibly smart, energetic, playful, inquisitive and surprisingly, loving and affectionate!

We find it hard to remember or imagine life without him in our home. There are new adventures every single day! One of Rascal's favorite pastimes is playing (supervised, of course) with his three dog "sisters", Scarlet, Missy and Angel (Shih-Tzu's). At night, they sleep by his cage and when he is being bad, they quickly tattle on him by alerting us.

Rascal spends several hours a day out of his condo playing. One of his favorite tasks is to help his dad unload the dishwasher (mom doesn't do dishes). Actually, it takes twice as long to do anything around the house when Rascal is "helping". All of those mundane chores are certainly a lot more fun with him around.

Another favorite activity for Rascal is to climb into handbags and see what he can steal. He has a couple of "hidey-holes" around the house, so we know where to look if something's missing - he's even carted away shoes that are twice his size.

It's never hard to find Rascal...he wears a little bell around his neck, and since he is in perpetual motion, the bell can be heard tinkling constantly. When we want him to come to us, squeaking one of his toys always brings him running.

This little animal, only weighing 2.5 pounds, will play until he drops from exhaustion - jumping, dodging, rolling and a maneuver we call the "flying squirrel".

When it's time for a long nap, he will go back to his condo and climb into his soft and cozy shelter. Sometimes we will peek into his shelter while he is sleeping - he looks so content and angelic. I wonder if he is dreaming about all the day's adventures and those yet to come.
