This
is Startime Whiskey King - we call him Jack. He was born March 28,
2006 - he is three weeks old in this picture. At that age he was already
smart as a whip and had already learned how to pick up his feet, have a
bath, walk and trot nicely on a lead rope, and come when called. He is
also the first foal that has ever been born on our place.
Now, at three months, Jack is a typical youngster... he plays hard and
then sleeps flat out in the hay. He is growing like a weed and now looks
forward to his breakfast and dinner in his own stall. He is not afraid
of anything yet, and is very trusting of me and my husband. He loves to
be brushed, especially on his neck and back and will contort his body so
that you brush the "itchy" spots. He is learning about respect for the
halter and lead rope and listening to commands like "whoa," "walk," and
"trot."
Jack is becoming more independent each day, and mommy is only the
"milk bar." He hangs out with Maggie, another mare in the field and is
more attached to her, because she is his friend and babysitter, rather than his
mother. He has learned that carrots are a wonderful treat and will stop
everything he is doing to get one. He will be a big boy when he is
finished growing (in about three years) and will be a beautiful golden
palomino. His major job at this point in his life is to learn his
manners, which will make him a wonderful companion and partner in the future.
