Chili
Bean - Chili for short - is a great pet. He was adopted from a
ferret rescue. He and his "sister" Pepper sleep 16-18 hours a day but
have adjusted to our schedules so they are up when we get up and when we
get home from work. They live in a big cage with several hammocks and
sleeping sacks, food, water and a litter box. When they are awake we let
them have the run of the house. They are litter trained. We have to
watch them though since it is hard to ferret-proof the whole house. They
climb on and into things and like to knock over things or dig into
plants or get into the trash. Our ferrets are not what we considered
cuddly. They come over to say hi now and then but usually act like hyper
two year olds when we pick them up. They want to be put down to do
exploring. They play with each other like kittens romping and running.
They like to play in bags and love tunnels (like dryer hose). Our
ferrets are not huge fans of water but if we put toys in a small tub of
water in the bathtub Chili will go in to "rescue" them. They both hide
all their toys under our bed so when we are missing something we always
look there first (medicine bottles, inhalers, pens...). It amazes us
what they find worth stealing. Ferrets are still kind of rare as pets so
we like to walk Chili and Pepper around the neighborhood on their
leashes. People ask what kind of dog they are or if they are squirrels
or weasels. Our ferrets do not bite (except an occasional dog) so they
are safe with kids and by people's faces. They are great pets for us.
