Butterscotch, the Pet of the Day
Name: Butterscotch
Age: Five months old
Gender: Male
Kind: Honey Bear Hamster
Home: Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

I never cared for hamsters all my life (60 years). Then I just happened to pass by the hamsters in a pet store - and fell in love. This little guy's face has a bear or dog look. The little five month old Honey Bear Hamster is adorable. I named him "Butterscotch" because he is that color.

Butterscotch is hilariously entertaining. Sometimes we play "games" with his food. I will hand him an item such as a blueberry. He will take a few bites and throw it into the corner by his nest so when he wakes up later he can have the luxury of "eating in bed". This goes on for some time. I hand him a piece of broccoli. He takes a few bites and throws it in the corner by his nest.

Butterscotch has never been big on the wheel - though he did pose for picture on it. He does love to climb. When I move him from his 20-gallon aquarium home to his three-story cage home, he loves to climb up the sides. He eventually falls to the floor of the cage. There is lots of thick, soft bedding material, so this does not hurt him at all. He just gets up and starts climbing again.

It is so endearing the way he puts his tiny hand on my hand when I'm giving him something to eat. Butterscotch is precious in my eyes and a real joy as a pet.
