Skippy, the Pet of the Day
Name: Skippy
Age: Ten months old
Gender: Male
Kind: Standard Gray Chinchilla
Home: Fairfax, Virginia, USA

From the moment I saw Skippy, I knew he would be mine. No one agreed with me. "He's too jumpy, he's too small, his coloring is too dark, he's too scared of humans, he's too expensive..." But I knew that he was the one. I had seen others-ones more calm, ones more "pretty" ones that were friendlier - but he was the one I chose. I got him just two days after I saw him. When I brought him home, all he wanted to do was hide. He would bark if you touched him. He wouldn't get anywhere near me, or anyone else.

It's been eight months since I bought him, and he has changed more than I would have imagined. He loved being held and cuddled. He eats food from my hand, and begs to be given treats by shoving himself against the side of the cage. He whines when I walk past his cage and won't stop until I pet him. I spend more on him than I spend on myself, but it is well worth it. Each day I let him out, and he amuses me and him-self by jumping off walls - and I mean that literally, chewing on his toys, and rolling around in his dust bath.

Of course, this is just the beginning of our friendship. He has at least a decade to go, and I will enjoy spending time with him every day of it.
