This
is Chula, my African Grey Congo parrot. Isn't he the most handsome
bird! I adopted him two years ago from a woman who could not handle him
because he did not like her husband and would bite her when he was in
the room. It was sad, because Chula was obviously very devoted to her.
He had other previous owners, and I think he was mistreated by a man,
because when I got him, he was terrified of men and children, and would
growl and puff up if they were anywhere near him. (This is how he got
one of his nicknames, Puff Daddy).
Anyway, I walked into the bird store where he was on consignment, and he
practically jumped into my arms. He would give me kisses, and would beg
to come to me. I tell people he picked me out instead of the other way
around. I have spent a lot of time getting him socialized with all
people, and now he does not freak out anymore when there are men or kids around.
I have had him for three years now, and I love him so much. He is such a
character, and so smart. He isn't a big talker, but does say, "Mama's
gotta go bye bye, Momma's gotta go to work, Adios, Hi Bird, Hi Chula,
What are you doing, S'ko! (short for let's go!) corn, store and shower".
He loves to hang out on the shower door. He loves to whistle and makes
the sounds of the wild mynah birds here, as well as kissing sounds and
the wolf whistle. He perfectly imitates my Amazon parrot's sounds. He
taps his beak against the wall like someone knocking on the door, and
dances by bobbing his head up and down as he walks. We are working on
the Mayberry RFD song, but he has his own version which is a riot.
When I got Chula, I promised he would never have to go to another home
again, that he would be with me forever. I cannot imagine life without
my little buddy. We are very devoted to each other, and I hope we are
together for a long time.
