I
bought my second rat after my gerbil passed away. I named him Icarus,
after my gerbil.
Icarus is a satin agouti hooded fancy rat/roof rat mix. People always
think there is a special story to his heritage; not really! I got him
from a pet shop that told me his mother was a roof rat caught in the wild,
and bred with a fancy rat. I don't doubt it. His nails grow like weeds,
and his climbing skills are amazing. He is small, only 283 grams, and
very slim. His tail is exceptionally long for his body, his nose is
pointy, and his ears stick up straight like a rabbit's!
I got Icarus to be a friend to my other rat, Frisco, who was pet of the
day back in July, 2003, however, Frisco had other things on his mind. He
didn't want to waste his time with a little baby like Icarus. He wanted
to beat him up instead! After many months of trying, I decided it was
impossible to get Frisco to understand. So they live in separate cages.
Icarus is definitely a joy to have in my life. He is very calm, and will
sit on your shoulder forever. He doesn't really like to kiss on the
lips, but always seems to know when you need it most. He is very sweet
and sensitive. He is a gentle soul.
I hope that the rats I get in the future are exactly like my Icarus.
There will always be a rat named Icarus in my life.
