We
originally got Dovey to be a companion to one of our older rats Chai,
whose sister (Pink) was dying and she was having trouble adjusting to
being alone. However, Chai didn't bond with the new baby and when Pink
passed away, so did Chai just days later. We were very sad but still
had a brand new baby who needed us. Attention was showered upon her and
as a result Dovey is more like a dog than a rat. She wakes up every
morning to demand breakfast (preferences are oatmeal and Cheerios) and
be put on her special place on the couch. She always wants to be with us
(she hates being put in her cage). She lays and watches tv, likes to lay
on your lap and wants to be petted constantly. She even gives kisses and
"grooms" us.
We have gotten new rats recently as we feared Dovey being alone might be
socially damaging to her. She likes the two new babies okay, but gets
very jealous. If I am petting one or giving one a treat, she runs over
and pushes them out of the way and gets under my hand so she is petted
instead. It's very funny. My boyfriend originally didn't want Dovey as
he was so attached to Pink and it was hard for him when she died, but
now every morning Dovey (aka Baby) rides around on his shoulder and is
spoiled rotten by him. Our Baby was there when we needed her to heal our
hearts, and has taken them over wholly.
